Classes & Registration 2016

Welcome to the 2016 BYC Junior Sailing Program!

Registration is for children ages 6 through 17 (and 18, if the individual turned 18 after the start of 2016).
  
Membership is not required to take sailing classes!  

This year's program continues the same easy-to-manage schedule!


Program Schedule and Key Dates
Session 1 of BYC's Junior Sailing Program WILL begin on Monday, June 20th. If your child will miss sailing class that day due to school still being in session, a make-up class is available to him/her on Friday, June 24th (same time block as his/her regular class).
 
Pre-Season Clinic:  Saturday & Sunday, June 18 & 19
8:30 am to 3:30, both days, offered to the four race teams
      
Session 1 Dates:  Monday, June 20 - Friday, July 15*
Kick-Off Dinner: Sunday, June 19 (Father's Day) - 5:30 optional dinner/6:30 awards & slide show
Junior Program Parade Float:  Monday, July 4 - set up at 8:30 am
Cookie Day (bring in your best baked creation for judging and sharing!):  Wednesday, July 13
  
Session 2 Dates:  Monday, July 18 - Sunday, August 14*
Take It to the Max Dance:  Monday, July 18 (6:30 to 8pm for under 12; 8 to 10 pm for 12 and older)
Jr. Cruise (overnight): Sunday, July 24
Pirate Day (show us your best pirate with costumes, props, etc.):  Tuesday, July 26
Pickles Wacky Race (the most fun you'll ever have - ahem - racing!):  Monday, August 1 at 5 pm

BYC Jr. Regatta*: Mon., Aug. 8 (check in), Tue. & Wed., Aug. 9 & 10 (race days)
Jr. Cups & Flags: Sunday, August 14, 5:30 pm optional dinner, 6:30 pm awards

*Note that there will be no sailing classes held on July 4 or on Beverly Yacht Club's Junior Regatta race days (August 9 & 10).


Friday Fundays (a.k.a. 'Round the Buoys)
Beginning July 1, BYC will offer Friday "Fundays" (a.k.a. 'Round the Buoys) from 8:30 to 11:30 am for sailing students - who are already able to sail on their own - as a way to enhance sailing skills beyond the regularly scheduled classes and to practice sailing a race course in a non-competitive environment.
 
?Friday Fundays on July 1, 8 and 15 are open to sailing students enrolled in a sailing class during session 1.
?Friday Fundays on July 22, 29 and August 12 are open to sailing students enrolled in a sailing class during session 2.

Class Schedule

All Classes run Monday through Thursday. (Fridays will be race/special program days - look for more information soon regarding this exciting part of our program!) Please note - UPDATE AS OF 7/8/16 - the only classes with space available for session 2 are 420-2 and Adventure.

Sea Monkeys - 8:30-11:30am (must be 6 yrs. old & have completed kindergarten) (session 1 & 2 are full) 
Opti 1 - 8:30-11:30am (session 1 & 2 are full) 
Adventure - 8:30-11:30am (space is available for session 2)
420-1 - 8:30-11:30am (session 1 & 2 are full) 
420-2 - 8:30-11:30am (space is available for session 2)
Opti 2 - 12:30-3:30pm (session 1 & 2 are full) 
Opti Green Race - 12:30-4:30pm (session 1 & 2 are full) 
Opti Race - 12:30-4:30pm (session 1 & 2 are full) 
420 Green Race - 12:30-4:30pm (session 1 & 2 are full) 
420 Race - 12:30-4:30pm (session 1 & 2 are full) 
  

Tuition/Fees
 
Two-Day Pre-Season Clinic
...$160 per sailor, includes lunches
 
Sea Monkeys, Adventure, Opti 1, Opti 2, 420-1, 420-2
... $510 if taking one session; $850 if taking both sessions
 
Opti Green Race, Opti Race, 420 Green Race, 420 Race
... $540 if taking one session; $915 if taking both sessions
 
A $280 non-member, administrative fee also applies to any sailor who is isn't part of a BYC Family membership.
   
A $100 deposit per class is due upon registration which will be put towards your class fees.
The $100 is non-refundable if you cancel your registration.

No refunds will be issued once the first class day arrives.

Please note that your sailor must have the following for class:

 
(1)  Personal Flotation Device (a.k.a., PFD or life jacket/vest) - type 3 or better with an attached whistle.  PFD must be Coast Guard Approved (look on the inside of the jacket and it must have a code on it starting with 160).
Important: Zhik brand PFDs are NOT Coast Guard approved.
(2) Closed-toe water/sailing shoes 
- no flip flops or sandals as they may catch on a cleat or more easily allow an injury to the foot.
(3) SPF 30+ sunscreen - applied to all sailors each day prior to arriving for class

Private Instruction^
$55 per hour, per child for Race Team Coaches
$45 per hour, per child for Sr. Instructors

^Sailor must be part of a BYC Family membership or the grandchild of a BYC member or enrolled in a 2016 BYC jr. sailing class in order to sign up for private instruction.


Planned Coordination with Recreation Department
 
You suggested it - we listened ... and as a result, sailing schedules can be coordinated more easily
with Marion Recreation's Summer Program for kids ages 6 through 12!
